What Is Cyber-Security?
Cyber-security is the collection of methods and technologies that help protect computer systems, networks, and data from unauthorized access or attack. It is a critical field in today’s tech-driven world as we increasingly depend on computers and the internet for communication (email, smartphones, tablets), entertainment (interactive video games, social media, apps), transportation (car navigation systems), and more. Frequent high-profile breaches have highlighted the need for robust cybersecurity measures.
The threat landscape is constantly evolving with thousands of new vulnerabilities identified each year, often exploited by hackers and malware. Human error also remains a significant risk factor as negligent employees or contractors can unintentionally allow cyberattacks to occur. Adding to the complexity, organizations are now relying on more connected devices such as IoT, blockchain and OT systems that increase the potential attack surface.
There are many ways companies can strengthen their defenses such as implementing single-sign on technology, forcing password changes and requiring multi-factor authentication, limiting work-from-home use of personal devices, instituting mandatory security training for all employees, and vetting third-party suppliers for their ability to detect and contain data threats. Additionally, companies should regularly back up all sensitive information to increase redundancy.
The field of cybersecurity is more collaborative than commonly portrayed, with professionals emphasizing teamwork as crucial. It is also more diverse than the image of “white-hat hacking” and can be a great career option for those with non-technical degrees as well.
