Malware is a general term for invasive software code designed to compromise the security and privacy of computer systems. It exploits vulnerabilities and spreads through phishing emails, infected files, system and software flaws, USB flash drives, and malicious websites. Once an attack is successful, it can steal or encrypt data, extort payment, and cause operational disruption.

Different types of malware look and work differently. For instance, a trojan horse, which is often injected into a device via social engineering, can linger undetected in a system until triggered by the right conditions (such as a click on an infected link) to gain unauthorized access or launch additional attacks. Once it’s installed on a target device, trojans can steal passwords or financial information, install cryptomining software to steal computing resources, or download and display unauthorized advertisements—often in the form of popup windows—to generate revenue.

Effective protection requires an integrated approach that includes anti-malware tools, patch management, email security, and a Zero Trust model for networks and applications. In addition to providing a comprehensive suite of solutions, a robust post-incident analysis helps close the gap between known and unknown threats, bolstering overall defenses.
