How Cybercrime Affects Businesses and Individuals
Cybercrime is an incredibly lucrative, borderless criminal enterprise, but it can leave lasting damage to businesses and individuals. From petty theft to acts of war and terrorism, cyberattacks affect more than just money; they can take away services, opportunities and trust.
Many people become victims of cybercrime without even realizing it. For example, a computer can be infected with malware without the victim’s knowledge when they click on suspicious links in spam emails or download files from unfamiliar websites. This could result in their personal information being stolen or their device being held hostage for ransom.
Other forms of cybercrime include identity theft, banking fraud and elaborate consumer scams. Banking frauds typically involve the theft of credit card or bank account details. Elaborate consumer scams may use phishing emails or fake seller accounts on popular eCommerce sites to trick consumers into transferring their personal information or paying for goods they haven’t received.
A growing and worrying category of cybercrime is hacking and data breaches. These attacks occur when hackers gain unauthorized access to private computers and networks, such as through a lack of strong authentication methods or passwords.
Other times, hackers gain access to systems by exploiting security holes and vulnerabilities in software or hardware that has been misconfigured. This can lead to the release of confidential or sensitive information or to the disruption of critical infrastructure, like hospitals, energy and transportation services. In 2023, a cyberattack happened every 39 seconds.
