Antivirus

Viruses and malware are dangerous programs that can corrupt your computer or laptop and steal or delete data. Antivirus software works to detect and eliminate these programs before they can cause damage. Antivirus software often runs scans on demand and on a scheduled basis to identify and remove viruses from your device or computer. Some antivirus programs also provide extra safety features like password management, identity theft protection, and parental controls.

How Antivirus Software Works

Many different technologies are used by antivirus programs to identify malware. They can use signature-based detection, which matches the patterns or characteristics of known malware with those stored in its database; heuristic-based detection, which identifies potentially malicious behavior; or a combination of both. Some programs also analyze the behavior of programs to determine if they act suspiciously, such as trying to access protected areas of the system or changing critical settings. Others use sandboxing, which tests suspect files in a virtual environment separate from your device or computer to see if they behave appropriately.

The best antivirus programs have high detection rates, which are based on controlled laboratory tests. These rates can give you a good idea of the effectiveness of a program but don’t tell the whole story. For example, some programs may have low detection rates because they try to block all suspicious activity rather than alerting you when something is wrong.

You should also consider a program’s price and extra safety features. You don’t want to spend more than you need to, but you also don’t want to cut corners on security.
