What Is Hacking and Why Do They Do It?
In a world where nearly every aspect of our lives is connected to the internet, hacking is a major concern. It’s important for people to understand what Hacking is, how hackers exploit systems and why they do it, so that they can avoid being a victim.
A traditional view of a hacker is of a lone, rogue programmer who is highly skilled in coding and changing computer software and hardware systems. However, hackers are far more sophisticated than that. They use stealthy methods to bypass cybersecurity software and attack victims. They are also skilled in monetizing the data they access by selling it to other hackers, or stealing it and using it for other malicious purposes such as spreading spam or launching DDoS attacks.
The goal of many hackers is financial gain, from stealing passwords to bank or credit card accounts to holding information hostage and demanding ransom payments. Others hack to promote a political agenda or to seek revenge on individuals or organizations they feel have wronged them.
The good news is that the bad guys can be stopped with better security practices and protocols. To protect your personal data, it’s important to avoid public Wi-Fi networks and always use strong passwords on all of your devices. Backing up your data and properly disposing of old computers and devices are additional steps to take to keep hackers from accessing your sensitive information. Hackers also tend to be highly creative and are always developing new ways to breach security protocols.
