Firewalls are one of the most important preventative cyber security tools that every business should have in place. They act as a barrier between your trusted internal networks and untrusted external networks like the Internet, third-party connections, and public wi-fi to stop hackers from accessing your systems and stealing data or using ransomware. Firewalls are a key element of any cybersecurity strategy, and proper configuration is essential to keep them functioning optimally.

Firewall technologies can be software-based applications, hardware devices built into specialized network equipment, or cloud services that are hosted on the service provider’s infrastructure. They can be configured to monitor domain names and IP addresses to filter data based on predetermined security rules to manage unauthorized access and prevent cyberattacks.

Packet-filtering firewalls operate at the network layer of the Open System Interconnection (OSI) model and filter traffic based on where it comes from, where it’s going, and what protocol it uses. They can be effective against basic threats and provide a simple, straightforward approach to network security.

Stateful inspection firewalls use advanced connection tracking to examine more elements of data packets than basic filtering methods, and are able to identify complex threats that can bypass standard filters. They can also perform deeper inspection of data by looking into the content of individual packets rather than just the header, enabling them to detect dangerous malware and ransomware attacks that basic filtering can’t detect.

Next-generation firewalls (NGFW) are a new breed of cybersecurity technologies that integrate the traditional functions of stateful inspection firewalls, anti-malware and antivirus protection, and intrusion detection at the gateway to offer more control, context, and visibility to prevent breaches. NGFWs also support cloud environments to protect against threats that target cloud-based data and applications.
