Cybercriminals continue to use Android malware to create bogus banking and social media apps that steal user data, security researchers warn. The threats take advantage of Microsoft’s.NET multi-platform App UI (MAUI) framework, an evolution of its Xamarin mobile development platform that allows developers to code once and deploy across platforms.

January 2024: A data breach of French health insurance companies exposed personally identifiable information for 33 million French citizens, including birth date, social security number and marital status but not medical records. The breach prompted the government to initiate an investigation of the companies to determine whether they followed cybersecurity guidelines set by the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation.

February 2024: Hackers compromised the IT network of Kuwait’s Ministry of Finance and threatened to publish confidential documents, but the organization isolated the systems to prevent further attacks. Kuwait has not yet commented publicly on the attack.

March 2024: Germany plans to establish a cyber military branch as part of a military restructuring. The new branch would help deter increasing cyber aggression from Russia against the country and NATO allies.

Hackers stole sensitive data on millions of Salvadorians from the nation’s cryptocurrency wallet Chivo, exposing 144 GB of personal information on a public forum. The hackers also hacked the company’s systems and released its source code.
