The World Is Going Digital, But Cyber Crime Is Also Growing Fast
In a time when many of our most valuable assets reside in the digital realm, criminals are finding new ways to steal these personal items and cause significant financial loss. The result is a worldwide epidemic of cybercrime that is growing at an alarming rate.
While traditional crimes such as burglary and murder still occur, the rise of cybercrime has caused law enforcement agencies to take notice. They are scrambling to catch up with this new threat, passing laws, forming special computer crime units and training their officers. But the problem is too big and complicated to be left solely up to politicians and police.
A cyber attack can be launched from anywhere in the world, and a criminal’s identity can be hidden with ease. These attacks are often carried out by organized crime groups that treat cyber crime as a business and even have underground marketplaces where they sell stolen information or identities. They are also able to cover their tracks by using computers in other countries where the laws are different, or because they can operate over the Internet.
To combat these threats, we must work together as a community to educate people about how to stay safe online. This includes avoiding clicking on links in emails or messages that come from suspicious sources and not giving out personal information over the phone or via email, unless you are completely sure who you are talking to.
