The world’s expanding digital ecosystems force organizations to prepare for threats shaped by geopolitical tensions and technological shifts. Adversaries continue to target the most critical business assets through automated reconnaissance and brute-force attacks leveraging stolen credentials and other tools. During 2024, cyber reconnaissance activity spiked to 36,000 malicious scans per second while exploitation attempts hit 97 billion. These exploitation efforts often exploit year-old vulnerabilities, reflecting patch gaps and the ongoing need for multi-factor authentication (MFA) and identity monitoring.

Cartier data breach: Luxury brand Cartier disclosed a breach in June 2025 that exposed limited customer information. The attack was associated with activity linked to the Scattered Spider cybercrime group. Illinois state agencies: Hackers compromised the accounts of Illinois Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and Illinois Health and Family Services employees, downloading nearly 300,000 crash reports containing personal and licensing information.

China telecom espionage: The Salt Typhoon campaign infiltrated major global telecommunication providers and gained unauthorized access to call logs and surveillance requests for a month or more. This allowed long-term intelligence collection against political figures and governments.

Enhanced security measures are necessary for protecting critical infrastructure against attacks. These measures include implementing an incident response team to help mitigate and respond to cyber incidents as they occur, and establishing a cybersecurity program that focuses on reducing the attack surface. This will enable organizations to reduce the risks of costly and disruptive cyber attacks. Threat actors keep their scams relevant and appealing by associating them with current events, such as elections or trending news stories. These attacks result in unwanted costs for businesses, including ransom payments, lost revenue due to disruption of operations, and the cost of securing and insuring networks, as well as reputational damage and loss of customers.
