Firewall is a network security device that monitors, filters, and blocks incoming and outgoing data packets based on predetermined rules. It establishes a barrier between a trusted internal network and untrusted external networks, allowing a business to safeguard its information from malicious activities or accidental data leaks. Firewalls can be found in both hardware and software forms, with each type having its advantages and disadvantages.

Firewalls can be divided into multiple categories based on their function and the kind of data they inspect. For example, network layer firewalls examine traffic at the lowest level of the TCP/IP protocol stack, examining data packets for specific criteria such as source and destination IP addresses, port numbers, and protocols to decide whether to allow or block them. These are often referred to as stateless firewalls, and are used to protect the perimeter of a network from the outside world or separate different departments within an organization, such as separating research systems from marketing systems.

Next-generation firewalls (NGFW) analyze traffic at the application level, inspecting the content of each packet and identifying malicious activity. These devices are able to detect new threats and are much more effective at handling novel attacks. They are also able to simplify management by integrating with other network security and IT monitoring solutions, allowing a single tool to be used for firewall segmentation and internal monitoring across large enterprise networks. Implementing best practices like properly configuring and managing firewall rules, implementing updates and patches regularly, and monitoring firewall logs and alerts can help minimize risks of malware infections or other types of attacks.
