Cyber-security encompasses all of the technologies and practices that keep computer systems, networks and electronic data safe. As the world goes digital, keeping that information secure has become a priority for companies of all sizes. Hackers, phishing schemes and ransomware attacks are just a few of the growing threats businesses must contend with to stay competitive and maintain customer trust.

Cybersecurity professionals can help organizations protect themselves against such risks by performing risk assessments, creating policies and implementing training and employee awareness programs to mitigate the threat of data breaches. This includes establishing a system of regular backups to ensure data is not lost or compromised following an attack. A successful cybersecurity strategy must also include measures to prevent unauthorized access by requiring multi-factor authentication for all network and software connections, educating employees on how to spot malware, requiring password changes on a regular basis, vetting third-party suppliers and instituting security protocols for work from home users.

A career in cybersecurity can be rewarding for those who are passionate about helping keep sensitive information safe. The field can be less intimidating for those who may not have a traditional IT background because there are countless routes to success within the industry. Alex Petitto ’21, an SNHU graduate with a bachelor’s in cybersecurity, started out by learning fundamental IT concepts online. He then focused on developing a specific expertise area rather than trying to learn everything at once. In addition to earning his degree, he participated in cybersecurity communities and national capture-the-flag competitions like the National Cyber League to build practical experience before entering the workforce.
