How to Protect Your Computer From Malware
Malware is malicious software that can be used to steal, hijack, and damage electronic devices and systems. It can be disguised as a helpful program or app that makes unauthorized changes to a device (such as displaying pop-up ads, changing search engine results, or adding icons to a desktop). This malware can also cause performance issues, monitor activity, record keystrokes, use the device for click fraud, or spy on personal information and send it to a cybercriminal.
A virus is a piece of malware that hides in other programs, then contaminates those other programs when they are run. A worm is malware that spreads between computers on a network, while a Trojan horse sneaks into a system disguised as a legitimate program, and then performs its action (such as stealing files or crashing the system).
Other forms of malware include spyware that collects information without the user’s knowledge and then shares it with third parties. Adware installs itself on a device to display or download advertising for revenue purposes and can also slow down a system. Some types of adware are also known for tracking activities and collecting sensitive data.
The best protection against malware threats is a combination of vigilance and well-designed protective tools. Avoid peer-to-peer file-sharing websites, and always scan external devices before using them on a computer or mobile device. Make sure antivirus and antispyware software is up-to-date, and set it to scan on a regular schedule. Change passwords for email, social media, and other online accounts and check the status of your favorite shopping sites and your online banking and billing centers. And if you think you’ve been hit by malware, REPORT IT! Contact your local FBI Office, the Federal Trade Commission, or the Internet Crime Center.
