What is Malware and How to Spot an Attack
Malware is a broad term that covers various types of malicious software. This type of malware steals data, disrupts devices and systems, and performs unauthorized actions. Cybercriminals leverage this weapon to profit from ransom payments, sell access to digital assets, compromise customer data and more. Understanding what malware is and how to spot an attack can be the difference between business continuity and total downtime.
A common sign of malware is a device performing slower than usual. This is because many types of malware utilize system resources and take up memory, leaving less available for other applications. Additionally, users may notice a lack of available storage space. Several types of malware use space to download more files and install themselves on the device.
Other signs of malware are changes to network activity or suspicious processes in Task Manager or other system monitors. These activities are often a result of a malware strain that changes device configurations or disables security solutions to evade detection. Similarly, IT and security teams may notice increased bandwidth usage or suspicious activity on devices that are connected to unknown servers.
Lastly, some of the most dangerous forms of malware are Trojans, Computer Worms and Spyware. These programs, which are usually concealed in legitimate programs, can steal personal or confidential information, such as login credentials and financial details. This is accomplished by leveraging system vulnerabilities, such as unprotected network protocols, unsecured server infrastructure and unsafe coding practices.
