Data Breach

Data Breach is a growing risk to all businesses and individuals. Attackers use breaches to steal data for financial gain or to cause harm, often via identity theft and fraud. The frequency of breaches underscores the need for enhanced cybersecurity measures and strategies. By studying breach events, organizations can learn from them by gaining insight into how attackers gained access, security gaps, and regulatory consequences.

Whether from malicious actors or careless employee mistakes, breach incidents expose sensitive information to the wrong hands. The resulting reputational damage can sink revenue and make it harder to attract the right employees. And in highly competitive industries, that reputational harm can be especially damaging.

For example, the 2024 TJX breach exposed the personal information of millions of customers and employees. Attackers stole credit card numbers and other payment data, demonstrating how easy it is for thieves to obtain sensitive data from even the largest of companies. The breach also revealed that TJX had been using a weak encryption method for in-store Wi-Fi, a critical vulnerability.

Other data breaches include the 2.9 billion credentials leaked in Collection 1 and sold on dark web marketplaces in early 2019. This information includes names, phone numbers, addresses, and other personal details. This information is a goldmine for threat actors and can be used to target phishing attacks, social engineering, and identity theft. The breach also highlighted the need for stronger security controls for cloud providers, such as requiring two-factor authentication and stricter permissions.
