Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting networks, devices, and data from unauthorized access and criminal use. It’s critical for everyone: from individuals using computers and smartphones to communicate with friends, family, and coworkers; to businesses that rely on technology like software, databases, and the cloud for daily operations; to organizations that rely on critical infrastructure like power plants, hospitals, banks, and transportation systems.

Effective cybersecurity combines preventive controls with detection and response mechanisms to keep threats from getting in the first place or, if they do, quickly stop them before they cause damage. The goal is to protect the data that drives the business, maintain customer trust, and limit regulatory fines and brand fallout that follow a cyberattack.

Ensure Metrics Are Actionable

A hundred metrics on a dashboard can be overwhelming and useless; each should have an impactful outcome, like increased user trust, compliance posture, or cost savings from fewer breaches. It’s also important to align security metrics with the business, which secures leadership buy-in and helps the organization focus efforts on what matters.

For example, if phishing click rates spike, the team could immediately invest in new training to reduce the rate. This creates a feedback loop for continuous improvement and fosters better, more informed priority setting.

A financially oriented KPI that measures the total cost of incident response, downtime, legal fees, and brand damage caused by attacks over time. It also enables C-suite and Board members to understand the cost of cyber risk and help inform strategic alignment and investment decisions.
