Cyberthreat News – Latest Issue
In the latest issue of Cyberthreat News, we look at phishing attacks targeting governments, political parties, and other organizations, and a large data breach that exposed personal information on more than 33 million French citizens. We also examine how hackers exploited flaws in widely used remote access and application delivery systems to hack critical infrastructure providers in the Netherlands.
March 2024: Hackers concealed ransomware in a fake dinner invitation from Germany’s Christian Democratic Union to target politicians and party members. The phishing attack was part of a wider campaign targeting European and U.S. politicians, businesspeople, and celebrities who had publicly denounced Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
June 2024: A new Russian-linked cyber espionage group launched attacks on Ukraine-based IT services providers. The attackers gained access to client networks by implanting malware in web applications that appeared benign but allowed attackers to bypass native security solutions.
July 2024: A new hacking group targeting telecommunications and Internet service providers in Asia-Pacific countries has been using newly developed malware that allows them to evade detection. The group has targeted government entities and other targets in Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia.
In August, Norway formally attributed an April cyberattack on a dam in Bremanger to Russia. The attack disrupted operations and impacted employee data but did not cause significant damage to the facility.
