What Is Cloud Security?
Cloud Security protects data and applications hosted in cloud environments from cyberattacks, maintains compliance, and ensures availability. It encompasses a wide range of practices and technologies including identity and access management, network security, threat detection and prevention, and incident response.
In most cases, it is the responsibility of both the cloud service provider (CSP) and the customer to secure their environment. This is because CSPs are responsible for the infrastructure and core services, while customers are expected to manage their own security controls such as network controls, identity and access management, data, and applications. This shared responsibility model creates challenges as organizations must comply with varying regulations, adopt secure DevOps practices, and keep up to date on threats to their cloud systems.
Security threats to the cloud are growing at an exponential rate, and if not addressed effectively, can lead to data breaches and loss of productivity. The risk of data breaches can also have long-term reputational damage and impact customer trust.
