What is Cyber-Security?

Cyber-security is the set of processes, tools, and technologies used to protect against malicious attacks that threaten data integrity, privacy, and availability.

Integrity guarantees that systems maintain the accuracy of information throughout its lifecycle. Availability keeps resources available to authorised users when needed and protects against disruptions such as cyber attacks.
Cyber threats have evolved significantly since the advent of the new millennium. Major worms such as ILOVEYOU and Code Red caused widespread disruptions, and high-profile cyber attacks on corporations and government agencies accelerated the need for stronger security measures. The proliferation of smartphones and IoT devices increased the attack surface, and the emergence of ransomware threatened organizational and individual livelihoods.
Increasingly sophisticated threat actors are utilizing AI to create more scalable and complex cyberattacks. Generative AI reduces the barrier to entry for novice cybercriminals while enabling advanced attackers to develop more agile and evasive tactics such as polymorphic malware that self-mutates during execution to evade signature-based detection systems. Security professionals need to keep pace with these advancements by leveraging continuous, real-time monitoring and implementing automated response capabilities that incorporate machine learning. They must also educate and train users to raise awareness of cybersecurity best practices and encourage safe behaviors.
