How Does an Antivirus Program Work?
As the number of Internet-connected devices grows, so does the need for strong antivirus protection. Antivirus software protects businesses of all sizes from a range of cyber threats, including ransomware, phishing, spyware, malware and other digital attacks that can damage systems and jeopardize sensitive data or the company’s reputation.
Most antivirus programs work by scanning a device’s system files and incoming data to look for malicious code or suspicious patterns. The program then either quarantines or deletes the threat to prevent it from spreading to other files or the entire computer. Depending on the program, it may also alert the user of a possible danger and provide instructions for how to proceed.
To keep up with the latest cybersecurity threats, most antivirus programs utilize multiple detection methods. For example, they often combine signature detection, which compares a file against a database of known malware variations, and heuristic detection, which looks for similarities between unknown files and other suspicious patterns. Heuristic detection is especially helpful in spotting new and emerging threats that aren’t yet part of a virus database.
Some antivirus products offer additional security features such as a password manager or identity theft protection. They may also include a VPN for added privacy and extra layers of protection. When selecting an antivirus, be sure to consider the program’s detection rates, scanning capabilities, and additional safety features, as well as its price tag.
