What Is Cyber-Security?
Cyber-security is the practice of protecting systems, networks, and data from cyberattacks and unauthorized access. It involves a complex mix of technologies, policies, and procedures that safeguard against a variety of threats. Cyber-security professionals must have a strong understanding of the entire threat landscape, from phishing to ransomware attacks, and from social engineering to hacking. They also must be able to evaluate the business impact of potential breaches and develop risk mitigation strategies accordingly.
As more and more of our lives become digital, cybersecurity becomes increasingly important. It affects everything from communication (email, texts, apps, video games) to transportation (cars that are also connected), shopping (credit cards and online banking) to critical infrastructure such as gas pipelines and electricity grids.
This digital transformation has made it easy to take advantage of vulnerabilities in computer systems, networks, and data storage. Cyberattacks can threaten confidential information, damage relationships with customers and suppliers, and even halt operations. The cost of a breach can be enormous, and the consequences can ripple outward from the business into society at large.
A solid security strategy includes implementing the principle of least privilege, which dictates that both software and personnel should be assigned the lowest level of permissions necessary to perform their jobs. This helps limit the damage of a security breach as a result of human negligence or malicious intent. It also includes educating employees on topics such as company policies, security best practices and incident reporting.
