What Is Hacking?
Hacking is exploiting vulnerabilities in cybersecurity defenses to gain unauthorized access to computers, devices, and sensitive information. A hacker uses a combination of technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, creativity, and persistence to bypass security measures and accomplish their goals. Hackers may want to steal private data, spread viruses and malware, or make a political or social statement.
Hackers can target any device connected to the Internet. Laptops and desktop computers are popular targets for hackers, as they typically store large volumes of personal or company data. Windows computers are more likely to be attacked by hackers, due to their wide use (72% of market share for desktop operating systems in 2024).
Mobile phones and tablets are also vulnerable to attacks. They often contain large amounts of sensitive data, such as financial transactions or text messages. They can also be used to communicate with other devices, such as IoT (Internet of Things) home appliances and security cameras, and can even transmit medical information.
A hacker’s goal is to get access to passwords or other personal information. They do this by exploiting weaknesses in a website’s security or using software that tracks a person’s keyboard input, such as a keylogger.
Hackers can also cause physical damage by stealing money or changing the destination of a transfer. In addition, they can cause reputational damage by leaking sensitive customer data or affecting the brand image of a bank or financial institution.
