How to Become a Hacker
Hacking is a term used to describe exploiting security vulnerabilities for malicious purposes. It can range from the stealing of personal data and online banking passwords to ransomware attacks that shut down entire businesses and millions of user accounts for days at a time. Black hat hackers use their skills for profit and can cause tremendous damage to businesses, organizations, and even governments. Ethical hackers are the good guys that use their curiosity to find and fix these vulnerabilities before illegal hackers can take advantage of them.
Hackers use a variety of tools to gain access to systems that they aren’t authorized to. They often begin with the scanning stage, where they identify potential entry points into the system. Once they have a list of targets, they move on to the gaining access stage. This can include spoofing wireless access points (W.A.P) with a more trustworthy name, or attempting to brute force their way into an account using a credential cracker.
Many hackers are motivated by corporate espionage, or by the desire to get revenge on people they feel have wronged them in some way. Some use their hacking skills to promote a political cause or social movement. Hackers also employ techniques like fileless attacks, which allows them to access sensitive data without leaving a trace.
The best way to become an ethical hacker is to start with a strong foundation in programming, networking, and operating systems. Seek out internships and participate in bug bounty programs to build your experience and skillset. Be sure to document all of your cybersecurity activities, and make a habit of practicing new hacking techniques on simulators and labs. It’s not uncommon to feel overwhelmed when learning a new skill, so it’s important to pace yourself and be patient.
