In the cybersecurity world, few threats have risen so fast and dramatically as ransomware. Wade Baker, collegiate associate professor of integrated security at UMUC and co-founder of the security think tank Cyentia Institute, has been a leading researcher into the dynamics and trends of this emerging menace.

Ransomware is malware that encrypts files and demands a payment for their return. Ransomware can target individuals, small businesses, enterprises and government agencies. In addition to the financial harm, attacks can disrupt business operations and services, resulting in lost productivity and revenue.

Cybercriminals are advancing their tactics to increase attack effectiveness and reach. Attackers are now targeting critical infrastructures such as hospitals, transportation systems and power utilities. In fact, attacks on healthcare, manufacturing and commercial facilities accounted for the majority of ransomware incidents tracked last year.

The use of “wipers,” which destroy the contents of a system rather than just encrypt files, marks a dangerous escalation of the threat. These innovations allow hackers to cause massive disruption and extort money without necessarily having the capability of decrypting data.

Attackers are also focusing on the public sector and supply chains. For example, the Alphv/BlackCat ransomware gang notably targeted Change Healthcare, a large provider of software for remote management monitoring. The gang’s 2024 attack on the company’s customers and their endpoints, resulted in major service outages for pharmacies, hospitals and medical practices around the world. Governments are stepping up efforts to disrupt these criminal networks through coordinated law enforcement operations and new regulations.
