By 2025, some estimates project that cybercrime will cost the global economy USD 10.5 trillion per year.

March 2024: Canadian authorities took the country’s financial intelligence system FINTRAC offline following a hacking incident, though it says the attack did not affect its sensitive systems. Hackers reportedly stole personal information for nearly half a million Canadian citizens.

November 2022: Suspected Chinese state-affiliated hackers boosted attacks on public and private organizations across Europe, the United States and Asia. The hackers used phishing campaigns to infect devices with malware that allowed them to spy on targets and access networks.

December 2021: Hackers exploited a critical vulnerability in Apache Log4j, an open source program that manages the IT logs of many organizations. They exploited the flaw to gain persistent access by tunneling through domain name system servers to infiltrate targets’ infrastructures.

August 2023: Chinese hackers launched an espionage campaign against Uzbekistan and the Republic of Korea using phishing campaigns and infected USB drives to steal information from their victims’ systems. They also targeted Japan’s space agency, compromising the organization’s directory and possibly revealing rocket and satellite operations information. Attacks by the group suspected of being linked to China’s government were also reported in November at organizations with ties to defense and energy industries.
