Malware is the generic term for software that’s been designed to disrupt operations, gather information without permission or knowledge, gain unauthorized access to system resources and engage in other malicious activity. It may infect computers, laptops, tablets and even smart televisions and gaming systems.

Cybercriminals use malware to steal critical data for monetary gain and to compromise devices or networks. This enables attackers to extort businesses by demanding payment to unlock or decrypt files and access data (ransomware), gain control of point-of-sale systems in retail environments, steal passwords from online banking accounts or mine cryptocurrency using victim’s computing power for their own financial gain.

Attackers develop and release new strains of malware regularly. Each strain carries different functions and targets. Some attacks are aimed at exploiting known vulnerabilities in applications and operating systems. Others target specific functions within an organization like human resources, sales or supply chain management.

A few examples of malware types:

Spyware: This malware tracks computer behavior and web habits to share information with third-parties. Ransomware: Encrypts files and denies access to them until a victim pays a demanded sum in cryptocurrency. Botnet malware: Uses infected computers to execute large-scale attacks against targeted businesses and individuals.
