What Is Cybersecurity?
Cybersecurity is the set of tools and processes that protects an organization’s systems and data from digital threats. It includes all the technologies, people and practices a company uses to avoid security incidents like data breaches and loss of critical systems.
From protecting the personal information stored on our devices to safeguarding the infrastructure that powers essential services, Cybersecurity is an integral part of our daily lives. The threat landscape continues to evolve as more businesses embrace digital transformation and individuals rely more on online services. As such, it is increasingly important to protect against sophisticated hacking attempts that can have serious repercussions.
What do you enjoy about working in cybersecurity?
I enjoy the challenge of defending against new and unknown attacks. It feels a lot like serious detective work. You have to find flaws in programs and protocols that hackers might exploit and then prevent them from happening. The work can be tedious and requires a lot of attention to detail, but it’s rewarding at the same time.
The future of cybersecurity is in preventing and detecting malicious attacks before they occur. This requires strong skills in intrusion detection, network monitoring and familiarity with SIEMs. It also requires the ability to understand and implement technology like firewalls, antivirus software and endpoint management solutions.
It’s vital to have strong cybersecurity in place to prevent data breaches that can damage a company’s reputation and cost them valuable customers. Additionally, it helps ensure compliance with regulatory bodies like HIPAA, PCI DSS and GDPR that can lead to heavy fines if not adhered to.
