The internet is a dangerous place for bad actors to attack and steal sensitive information. From data breaches to ransomware, attacks on individuals and businesses are becoming more sophisticated and frequent. Defending against these threats is the responsibility of everyone — from individuals, families and small businesses to SLTT and federal agencies.
Bad actors, also known as threat actors or hackers, conduct cyberattacks to obtain sensitive information for monetary gain. These include criminal syndicates and nation-state attackers. They can be individuals who act alone or groups of computer experts.
Malware (malicious software) is used by threat actors to steal personal information such as credit card and bank account numbers, as well as passwords. Hackers can also use malware to disrupt services such as phishing attacks or DDoS (distributed denial-of-service) attacks.
Attackers can also cause disruption for social or political reasons. They can embarrass or damage the reputation of public entities such as government departments or companies, or they may seek revenge for real-world events that affect their own interests. This type of cyberattack is often launched by a group of hackers called hacktivists.
Other types of cyberattacks include SQL injection, zero-day exploits and domain name system tunneling. The first occurs when hackers inject malicious code into a server using Structured Query Language, while the latter involves an unsuspecting individual visiting a website that automatically infects their system with malware. The last is when a hacker gains persistent access to a network through unauthorized access points or by taking advantage of a vulnerability in the open source code base.
