Cyber-security is the practice of protecting networks, devices and data from unauthorized access or criminal use. It includes processes that allow only authorized users to access information and provides mechanisms for monitoring and detecting attacks as they occur. It also includes the ability to respond quickly and effectively to mitigate risks, close vulnerabilities and prevent future attacks.

Our modern world relies heavily on technology—email, mobile phones, apps, social media, online shopping and banking just to name a few. All this digital information creates a target-rich environment for cybercriminals to exploit. From personal identity theft, extortion and loss of irreplaceable family photos to industrial espionage, ransomware, data breaches, regulator censure and dented reputation, cyberattacks can have devastating consequences.

The threat landscape is constantly changing as attackers find new ways to penetrate security defenses. New attack vectors include artificial intelligence (AI), operational technology (OT) systems, Internet of Things (IoT) devices and cloud environments. Even seemingly harmless activities—from using the same password for multiple log-ins to oversharing on social media—can increase an individual’s risk of attack.

While sophisticated attacks are increasingly common, cybersecurity solutions can minimize the impact of an attack. Regular cyber risk assessments help identify and assess threats while determining whether controls are effective. Formal training for staff on topics such as cyber awareness, industry best practices, organizational procedures and policies as well as monitoring and reporting suspicious, malicious activity are important too. The Navy offers several scholarship programs for bachelor through doctoral students that include cyber security as a component of their studies.
