What is Cloud Security?
Cloud Security is a collection of processes and techniques that aim to ensure the integrity, availability, and security of data and applications in the cloud. This includes both public and private clouds as well as hybrid environments. It encompasses a range of technologies, including identity and access management (IAM), threat intelligence, firewalls, encryption, monitoring and alerting, and much more.
Insufficient security often leads to data breaches, outages and compliance issues. Inadequate disaster recovery and incident response also impede business operations. Employees using unauthorized cloud services on company networks can lead to exposure of sensitive information and potential legal issues.
Although many leading cloud service providers offer strong protections for their customers’ data, they are not immune to attacks by hackers. Attackers can exploit flaws in software, infrastructural problems or other vulnerabilities.
Cloud Security needs to be a shared responsibility between the CSP and their customer. CSPs should be transparent about what they can and cannot do to protect data, while their clients must educate employees about safe cloud practices.
The best defense against threats to cloud systems is encryption. By encrypting data at rest, in use and during transmission, it can be difficult for hackers to access the data even if they successfully breach a system. This is a simple precaution that all users can take to improve their cloud security posture. In addition, organizations should backup data locally to reduce the risk of data loss in the event of a disaster.
