Cybercrime – A Global Phenomenon
Cybercrime is an ever-growing global phenomenon with a massive impact on individuals, businesses and governments. Unlike traditional crimes that require a physical presence, cybercrimes can be committed anywhere in the world with access to computer networks. The internet’s speed, convenience, anonymity and lack of borders make it easy for criminals to hide their tracks. As more and more smart devices connect to the internet, the crime landscape has evolved with new opportunities for exploitation.
Cybercriminals use a wide range of techniques to commit crimes. Some of these tactics include phishing, ransomware, data breaches and impersonation. The latter involves gaining a person’s trust by pretending to be someone of interest to them (such as a friend or romantic partner) so they will share sensitive information with the cybercriminal, leading to financial loss and other harms to the victim.
Another common form of cybercrime is a distributed denial-of-service attack. This type of attack takes advantage of network vulnerabilities to take systems offline, making it difficult for users to access online services or conduct business. Other attacks are designed to spread malware or access information stored on a device for unauthorized purposes.
The investigation of cybercrimes requires specialized skills and experience. HSI’s investigators perform a variety of duties, including collecting and analyzing evidence, testing security systems, recovering password-protected or encrypted files, and preparing expert reports on highly complex matters. They also train law enforcement on cyber-related issues and work in a multi-jurisdictional environment, often with international partners.
