A cyberattack is any type of malicious attack that leverages the internet to cause harm or gain access to data. Threats are categorized as either malware, phishing, ransomware, and more. Malware is software used to compromise a system, typically to steal data or to hold it hostage for monetary gain. A phishing attack is an attempt to trick victims into clicking on a link that contains malware, or can be disguised as a legitimate file download or social media post. A ransomware attack is an attempt to extort victims by demanding a payment to unlock or restore data or services.
