What is Cloud Security?
Cloud Security is the collection of technologies and processes that protect data, applications, networks and other cloud-based resources from cyberattacks. It includes tools that can help prevent unauthorized access to the cloud, reduce threats that penetrate the firewall and stop malicious attacks in their tracks. These include encryption, identity and access management (IAM), and cloud-based protection mechanisms such as security information and event management (SIEM).
The most important aspect of cloud security is preventing a breach. That requires choosing a reputable cloud provider that offers good security practices, certifications and compliance with industry standards. Organizations should also monitor network traffic and user activity to detect unusual patterns of behavior that could signal a security incident.
Insider threats include employees who are unknowingly or intentionally accessing sensitive or confidential information. They may use weak passwords or other authentication protocols to gain unauthorized access and steal data. Other threats include denial-of-service attacks, which flood a cloud-based system with data to overwhelm capacity and cause it to crash. Denial-of-service attacks can affect productivity, lead to lost revenue and damage a company’s reputation.
To mitigate these threats, organizations should implement a strong backup and disaster recovery plan. They should also encrypt data stored in the cloud, which scrambles it into a form that can only be understood with a special key. Other security measures include assessing security settings and increasing them when data needs extra protection, as well as testing for misconfigurations that might endanger the integrity of data.
