What is Hacking?
Hacking is the process of using software and hardware to gain unauthorized access to systems and data. Hackers exploit vulnerabilities in cybersecurity defenses to achieve a range of aims including spying, collecting sensitive information, injecting malware, or carrying out other cybercrimes. Hackers are highly skilled at creating stealthy attack methods that can go undetected by cybersecurity systems and other security measures. Early depictions of hackers often portrayed precocious teens breaching major organizations’ systems for notoriety but today hacking is a multibillion dollar industry with attacks carried out by people across a wide demographic profile.
Among the biggest motivations for hacking are financial gains. These can be achieved by stealing passwords, stealing credit card numbers or bank accounts, selling data on the Dark Web, or by draining a victim’s money through ransomware. Other reasons include having fun, notoriety, or gaining revenge.
In addition to personal computers, mobile phones and IoT devices are common targets for hackers. Wi-Fi routers are a particular target because they serve as the gateway to any device connected to them but don’t have the same security protections that apply to computer or phone systems. This makes them easy for hackers to infect with software that allows them to spy on users, hijack their webcams, and take over the device’s functions remotely.
Educating employees about basic security best practices can help to reduce the risk of hacking. Employees should not use public Wi-Fi networks for personal or financial data, back up their electronic devices regularly and make sure they properly erase and dispose of old devices that could contain sensitive information. Companies should also conduct ethical hacking tests to identify and address security weaknesses.
