Phishing is a malicious attack that tricks internet users into disclosing sensitive information such as login credentials, credit card numbers or bank account details. The attacker can then use this information for various purposes including money withdrawal, blackmailing or committing frauds and other cyber crimes.

The phishing process can take place over email, text message, phone call or via social media. The attacker will typically try to impersonate someone you trust (such as a colleague or a friend) and try to trick you into giving them your information. They may also attempt to apply false urgency in their messages by claiming that your account has been or will be shut down if you don’t click on the link or verify your identity. This should immediately raise suspicion, especially when paired with the use of formal language or imagery that feels out of character.

Criminals are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their attacks. They often make their emails look authentic by using legitimate logos and fonts in their messages. They can also spoof your caller ID to make their calls appear to be from someone you know.

It’s important to keep your security software up-to-date, change passwords regularly and review your privacy settings in your social media accounts to reduce your risk of being phished. Additionally, be sure to install a firewall as a first line of defense; it will prevent malware from downloading onto your computer and allow you to detect suspicious outgoing activity.
