Cyber-security is the practice of protecting technology, data, information, devices and appliances from unauthorized access or criminal use. This is done through the use of cyber defense tools and processes to identify threats and vulnerabilities, prevent unauthorized intrusion and reduce risks of damage or loss.

This includes physical security, such as firewalls, antivirus software and encrypting data to protect privacy. It also requires awareness training for staff so they know what to look out for and how a seemingly harmless action could leave the system vulnerable to attack. Implementing a management system that covers identification, inventory, classification and monitoring of all endpoints in an organization is another important aspect of cybersecurity.

All of these components of cyber-security are necessary to keep people, organizations and communities safe from cyber harm. This can include everything from identity theft to ransomware and even to the exploitation of critical infrastructure like power plants, hospitals and banks. Qualified cybersecurity professionals are needed to help stop these attacks and defend the people, businesses and the nation.

Michigan Technological University is working to meet the national need for cybersecurity professionals by providing new graduate and undergraduate scholarships. Through the CyberCorps Scholarship for Service program, you will have the opportunity to receive full tuition and education-related fees, a stipend and professional development opportunities while serving in one of the top cybersecurity positions in the country. You will be working alongside national leaders in this field at the highest levels of government, industry and academia to develop next-generation skills to confront the ever-evolving threat landscape.
