Malware is an umbrella term for computer programs designed to infiltrate or disrupt your device’s normal functioning. Attackers can use it to steal sensitive information, remotely control your device or network, spoof your identity, run unwanted ads and more. Trojan horses, viruses, worms, bots, spyware, adware and rootkits all fall under the category of malware.

When a device is infected with malware, performance declines as the attacker uses your device’s resources to execute malicious functions. Users may notice a slowing of their devices, crashing or pop-ups that are difficult to get rid of. IT support teams often receive an influx of tickets from users complaining of these symptoms as well as new and unusual network activity. This could include an unexpected increase in bandwidth consumption, devices communicating with unidentified servers or user accounts accessing assets they typically don’t use.

Cybercriminals use malware to perform a variety of activities, such as stealing banking credentials, accessing cloud storage or threatening to lock your device unless you pay a ransom. They can also gain unauthorized control over your device by installing software, changing web browsing settings or recording your keyboard and mouse activity.

Often, attackers can spread malware to your devices by tricking you into clicking on links or opening attachments in emails and instant messages. To reduce the risk of infection, only click on links from trusted sources and always scan downloaded files and applications with your security software. You should also be wary of using NAS and other remote storage devices in your office as they can be a common target for attacks.
