The cloud is a dynamic environment that needs to be protected using a flexible security architecture that allows for the identification of the most relevant assets, devices and users. This includes a dynamic authorization procedure that allows employees to access data only to the extent that is absolutely necessary for their job (least privilege principle). Additionally, the protection of cloud infrastructures from malware attacks is essential. In this context, it is important to educate employees not to use unauthorized cloud services on company networks. This way, sensitive information is not communicated through unsecured channels and does not end up in the hands of malicious actors or even in legal trouble.

In addition, it is advisable to make backups of particularly sensitive data in the cloud. This protects the data against unforeseen events, such as a power outage at a cloud provider, which could lead to the permanent loss of important business data.

It is also advisable to implement external encryption programs for the most sensitive data in the cloud. This makes the data independent from the cloud operator, which provides additional protection against attacks from malicious actors. It is also a good idea to regularly check the data stored in the cloud, i.e. to assess whether it still requires protection and increase the level of security settings where appropriate. Finally, it is a good idea to delete data that is no longer required – ideally on a regular basis.
