digital security

Digital security is the umbrella term for all of the resources employed to safeguard your online data, identity and assets. It differs from cyber security, which protects entire computer systems and their components (such as operating systems, routers and servers).

Think about the most prized physical possessions you own: heirloom jewelry in a safe, a signed copy of your home title kept in a safety deposit box. You likely take steps to protect those items from theft, but your digital assets deserve the same level of protection. Even if you’re careful, a hacker can steal your information and use it to drain your bank accounts or commit other crimes.

If you want to avoid becoming a victim of such an attack, consider these less aggressive forms of digital security: using strong passwords, different passwords for every site and not sharing them with anyone; always checking the privacy settings on social media accounts; not clicking on links from suspicious emails or websites; and using two-factor authentication on your cell phone. A more robust form of digital security may include installing an antivirus program, a firewall and monitoring your internet usage.

Cybercriminals are opportunists and just need one good haul of data to make the effort worth it, such as your credit card information, bank account balances or personal health records. These valuable assets can be used for anything from filing false insurance claims to buying and reselling prescription drugs. As technology advances, hackers are able to access more sensitive data. This can cause real-world consequences, such as air traffic control outages or loss of aircraft.
