What Is Cyber-Security?
Cyber-security is the use of technology to protect against malicious activities like hacking, data theft, identity theft and extortion attacks. Cyber-security solutions include firewalls, anti-virus software and malware protection tools. It is an essential component of any business as it helps to ensure that sensitive information is not exposed. This also helps to prevent financial loss and reputation damage for the company.
The recent massive data breaches by Equifax and Yahoo are a clear indicator of the growing need for robust cyber-security strategies. Every industry is at risk from attackers who target web-based systems to get access to sensitive user data or disrupt service.
Defending against cyber attacks starts with having a strategy, supported by senior management and shared with the entire organization. This involves an inventory of the assets the organization has and what the consequences would be if those assets were attacked or compromised. Once this is done, the organization can decide which cybersecurity solutions to implement.
Firewalls are one of the most important cyber-security solutions as they act as gatekeepers between a computer and the internet, protecting it from malicious activity. It is also essential to have security protocols that require multiple levels of authentication before accessing the system. This can include a password, a biometric scan or an image of the person’s face.
The NCSC recommends that organizations train their employees to recognize and respond to cyber attacks. They can do this through phishing simulations or by educating them on the basics of cyber attack methodologies and countermeasures. These trainings should be ongoing and updated. It is also advisable to have a backup plan to prevent data loss in the event of a security breach.
