A Data Breach occurs when a company, organization or entity loses access to sensitive information. Breaches can result in fines, financial loss, reputation damage and other negative effects.

In the US, data breaches can include the release of personal information or a combination of personally identifiable information and other types of sensitive data. Often, these breaches are a result of human error or insider misuse.

Hackers who break into a network and gain access to PII can use tools such as malware and botnets, which are networks of infected computers that enable them to access information on other compromised computers. They can also exploit supply chain attacks, in which a third party that is a member of a business’s network becomes infected with malicious software and then accesses the data of other businesses.

The Red Cross had a large data breach last year, in which 515,000 people who were displaced by war had their information leaked online. It affected many different countries, including the U.S., the United Kingdom, and Canada.

Australian telecommunications company Optus suffered a severe data breach in 2022. It is not clear how many customers were affected, but if any did, hackers may have exposed their names, addresses, driver’s license numbers, and payment details.

Depending on the type of data that was compromised, you might have to notify affected individuals and the data protection authority (DPA) in your jurisdiction. You should work closely with forensics experts and determine the best course of action to mitigate the impact of the breach.
