Types of Malware and Viruses
Malware is any software that can be used to damage, disrupt, or gain unauthorized access to your computer, device, or network. Common types of malware include viruses, worms, trojans, ransomware, botnets, and spyware.
Viruses
Viruses are programs that can corrupt and delete data, alter or destroy files, use your email to spread the virus, or even wipe your hard drive clean. Often hidden inside an executable file, these malicious files can be downloaded from the Internet and installed on your system.
Worms
Unlike viruses, which require the user to click or download the malware in order to infect the computer, worms automatically spread themselves by forming connections with other computers on the same network. They can then exploit the entire network, and they may be hard to detect unless the number of infections is high enough to consume significant bandwidth or system resources.
Botnets
Botnets are networks of infected computers controlled by single attackers using command-and-control (C&C) servers to launch attacks. They are powerful, versatile, and adaptable, able to maintain resilience through redundant servers and by using infected computers to relay traffic.
Cryptojacking
Cryptojacking is the process of taking advantage of computers to mine cryptocurrency, and this type of attack is particularly dangerous because it’s often difficult for users to remove it. Many businesses are vulnerable to this attack because they have multiple devices that are all connected to a central server. These devices can be used to send a large volume of data to the attackers’ C&C servers, launching a distributed denial-of-service attack.
