Antivirus

Antivirus protects against a variety of malware threats that can infiltrate your computer and wreak havoc on your system. They can include viruses, worms, ransomware and spyware.

Typically, antivirus software is sold in annual renewable licenses at two or three levels. Most of these packages are deeply discounted the first year.

A good antivirus program will offer protection against a variety of malware threats and will have on-demand tools to help sift through email threads, attachments or various web activities to identify suspicious behaviors. It will also scan your system for malware on a regular basis and try to remove any threats that are found.

Modern AV products use heuristic analysis methods to catch as of yet unknown, new, and altered malware strains in the wild. These methods match files against a database of file signatures that are characteristic of known malware.

Cloud-based detection is a more modern and innovative form of signature-based detection that uses online resources to ensure the database can detect the latest file signatures associated with attacks. This allows antivirus programs to analyze all of the files on your computer without taking up a significant amount of storage space and slowing down your system.

Most antivirus programs automatically update their databases of virus definitions as they identify and block new infections. They can do this through automatic updates or by requesting it. However, remember that you should never believe alarmist emails claiming that the “worst virus in history” or the “most dangerous malware ever” has been detected and will destroy your computer’s hard drive.
