Hacking

Hacking is a term that’s often used to describe unauthorized access into a computer system or device. However, the word can have many different meanings.

It can refer to anyone who accesses a computer system without permission, including unauthorized users, malicious hackers and security professionals.

The Jargon File defines Hacking as: “The unauthorized, destructive use of software to gain unauthorized access to systems.”

In the context of cybersecurity, it’s important to recognize that hackers are not a single person or rogue programmers, but a multibillion-dollar industry that uses stealthy methods to target computer users. These techniques include phishing emails, bogus links and attachments that trick users into revealing their sensitive personal data to criminals who want to steal money or information.

There are two main types of hackers: blue hats and script kiddies. The former are hackers who use a variety of tools to gain unauthorized access to systems, including malware and viruses.

Blue hat hackers may also use their skills to extort monetary gain, such as posting personal and confidential information online to ruin reputations or stealing bank account details from their victims. They are generally considered to be bad guys who do not take responsibility for their actions.

The second type of hacker is called white hat, or ethical hackers. These are professional hackers who are hired by organizations to carry out hacking operations for security purposes. They are also responsible for identifying vulnerabilities in systems and networks that can be exploited by malicious hackers, and working to patch these vulnerabilities before they are exploited.
